Comparing Sanitation Systems Using Sustainability Criteria
By Maria Lennartsson, Elisabeth Kvarnström, Tommy Lundberg, Jacinto Buenfil and Ron Sawyer

This report presents how criteria-based comparison of sanitation systems can be used to guide decision makers and planners to take strategic decisions based on sustainability when planning for sanitation. The report uses three examples from three different countries, from a municipal perspective, to illustrate the use of the criteria. Due to the fact that sustainability is a context-specific matter, no sanitation system can be considered universally sustainable; therefore each needs to be assessed in a specific context.
