Dedication to Dr. Steven Esrey
Steven Esrey passed away in December 2001
following many years of struggle with cancer. Steve was one of the
"founding fathers" of ecosan. Working as a nutritionist at
UNICEF, it was obvious to him and his colleagues that food alone was not
the reason for diarrhea and disease in children and their families.
Something simple but radical was needed to interrupt the disease vectors
between inadequate sanitation facilities and people. So he and a few
others pioneered the concept of ecological sanitation, provided a vision
for the world to follow and managed to publish a number of key
contributions towards this cause. We carry the torch for our friend and
colleague Steve Esrey.
