NETSSAF Conference: Pathways towards Sustainable Sanitation in Africa. 24-27 September 2008 in Burkina Faso

The consortium of the Network for the development of Sustainable Approaches for large scale implementation of Sanitation in Africa (NETSSAF) cordially invites you to attend its International Conference titled "Pathways towards Sustainable Sanitation in Africa" to be held between the 24 - 27 September, 2008 at the Azalaï Hotel Independence Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The general objective of the conference is to bring together members of the NETSSAF consortium jointly with national and regional decision makers, sanitation professionals, practitioners and scientists, to present the results of the Coordination Action and discuss future trends and directions concerning the large scale implementation of sustainable approaches of sanitation in rural and peri-urban areas in West Africa.

Topics to be addressed at the conference will include:

  • Current situation of sanitation in West Africa
  • Achieving the MDGs related to water supply and sanitation in Africa
  • Potential technical solutions for implementation of sustainable sanitation in rural/peri-urban areas in Africa
  • West African Database of Sanitation Supply and potential technology transfer associations
  • Adapted Sustainable Sanitation Management System: participatory approach of planning and implementing large scale sanitation projects
  • Strategies for effective awareness-raising campaign to engage relevant actors in the sanitation field in rural and peri-urban areas
  • Appropriated strategies of capacity building of actors for sustainable sanitation, according to local conditions of rural and peri-urban regions of West Africa
  • Future research, technology development and cooperation strategies


  • There is currently the "Call for Papers" still open for interested authors and the deadline for this is the 31st of May, 2008. More information regarding the guidelines for writing the abstract as well as submission can be found at the NETSSAF conference homepage. Please note that should you wish to participate in this call, all abstracts must be submitted not later than May 31, 2008. Notification of selection will be made on July 15, 2008.

    We are soliciting both oral and poster presentations and we strongly encourage you to consider submitting. It is an excellent forum to present and demonstrate findings, methods, and issues related with the objectives of the conference.
